9 Grounds for a Reno Divorce in 1931

In 1931, Nevada law allowed for nine legal grounds for a divorce. The most popular was mental cruelty and it could cover a wide variety of complaints such as, “He reads the newspaper at breakfast, your honor, and ignores me” or “She snores in her sleep, your honor, and keeps me awake.”

1. Impotency
2. Adultery
3. Desertion
4. Conviction of a felony
5. Habitual drunkeness
6. Neglect to provide the common necessities of life
7. Insanity
8. Living apart for three years
9. Extreme cruelty entirely mental in nature
